Women and eSports

For this project, I took a look at two video games played professionally (Starcraft 2 and League of Legends) and attempted to explain the appalling lack of successful female players. To do so, I discussed reasons why it is difficult for women to break into eSports. Briefly, rampant misogyny and a small player base have lead to a disproportionately small number of women who play video games professionally.

The experiences of several women are integral to this project. Team Siren's brief history shows the impact that community backlash can have on a team comprised entirely of women. The careers of Eve and Aphrodite serve as examples of skilled players who were recruited directly into top level teams but who were unable to achieve any real success. And Scarlett is the only female professional gamer in either game who has been able to achieve a measure of success.

Behold, the only video clip I will be showing.

Fixing this situation is difficult. It will take time, and an enormous amount of effort to make eSports communities places where women feel welcome.
